* * *

* On April 4, 1949, the Washington Treaty was signed “to create a shield against aggression and the fear of aggression.” NATO is as united in its commitment today as it was 76 years ago.

* All this time, the Alliance has remained steadfast in its determination to preserve peace, protect its citizens, defend every inch of its territory, and safeguard freedom and democracy.

* Over the past 76 years, NATO has successfully evolved and adapted to the ever-changing security environment in the Euro-Atlantic region to ensure that it is ready to defend its members against any aggressor at any time.

* NATO is a unique organization. It is the first consensus-based political-military Alliance with all its members participating on an equal footing, and the first established in peacetime to prevent conflict and preserve peace.

* The contributions of NATO countries to the southern region of the eastern flank, on land, in the air, at sea and in cyber environments, reflect an increase in attention paid to this region, a greater recognition of the necessity to strengthen it, as well as correct manifestation of solidarity between Allies.

* The Romanian Armed Forces have constantly contributed to the consolidation of NATO’s military infrastructure providing structures, facilities and the related military and civilian personnel on the national territory. Currently, there is a complete security architecture up to corps-level with missions beyond the country’s borders, including Bulgaria.

* NATO Day, celebrated on April 4, is a significant moment that marks the founding of the North Atlantic Alliance in 1949. Beyond celebrating Allied history, NATO Day is also a moment of reflection on the values and goals that unite us.
